Description:

the main varieties grown in Piedmont are: Galucio (Bigarreau cherry), Graffione Bianco (the Asti typical cherry), Vittona; between early varieties Bigarreau Burlat, Vignola, Martini.

Origin:

Temperate regions of Northern Hemisphere. In Piedmont cherries are mainly grown on the Turines hills around Pecetto. Small crops are also present in Revigliasco, near Asti. In Cuneo they are present throughout the foothill level and in the low Langa.

 

The fruit:

fleshy drupe with a bright red to a deep purple depending on variety, with yellowish or red flesh, also depending on the variety.

Maturation:

June 5 – July 15

Flavor:

sweet, sourish or bitter depending on the variety.

Curiosity:

in Piedmont, the only historical product packaged with these fruits is the Ratafià, an infusion made from the wild black cherries. San Gerardo is generally represented with a stick from which hangs a sprig of these fruits.

It's good because:

cherries contrast hypertension are slightly laxative and diuretic, rich in vitamins, especially A and C and contain many minerals (potassium, calcium, iron). Besides it seems that they have a beneficent effect on the inflammations of the joints determined by the arthritis.
