Description:
the main varieties grown in Piedmont are:
- group of floricanes strawberries fruiting once once a year: Alba, Asia, Antea, Clery, Lia, Arosa and Argentera;
- group of remontant strawberries: Albion, Elsinor, Charlotte, San Andreas, Portola, Monterey.
Origin:
it is a European origin plant found wild in our woods (Fragaria vesca). The cultivated varieties are hybrids whose production began in the late 1700s. In Piedmont the vast majority of production is located at altitudes between 600 and 800 m, in a clearly delimited area of Cuneo that includes the municipalities of Peveragno, Boves and Chiusa Pesio.
The fruit:
it is actually a false fruit: it is constituted by the receptacle that grows, becomes succulent and presents on the surface of small achenes (the true fruits).
Maturation:
floricanes: April 1 – July 15; remontant : 1 July – 15 November
Flavor:
tasty, sweet and juicy.
It's good because:
strawberries are low in calories, are a good source of fiber and vitamin C, but also contain vitamins A, B1, B2, organic acids, mucilage and sugars (fructose and sucrose). They have an average mineral content (among which potassium and phosphorus). They have digestive, purifying and refreshing properties.
